Your Ultimate Autumn Body Care Routine
After months of sea salt, sun exposure and summer sweat, it’s time to start cocooning the skin to prepare it for the cooler months ahead. With the change in seasons comes a change in how we approach the products we use in our daily routines. Most of us tend to focus on the face, but it’s important to extend this same level of care and attention to the rest of our body - especially during autumn, when dry air and low humidity can wreak havoc on the skin. Read on for five ways to optimise skin health this autumn.
1. SPEED UP SKIN CELL TURNOVER
As the mercury drops, the skin can become dry and dull. We recommend using a gentle body exfoliator a few times a week to delicately buff away dead skin cells to reveal brighter layers of skin beneath. Regularly exfoliating the body can also help to prevent body acne, like back and chest acne, which is caused when oil, dirt and bacteria clog the skin's pores. Our BODY POLISH harnesses both physical and chemical exfoliators, along with plant-based ingredients curated for their naturally active properties.
LUI Tip: Apply the BODY POLISH in small, circular motions, paying attention to any particularly rough patches (often occurring on knees, ankles and elbows).
2. FORTIFY YOUR SKIN'S BARRIER
Increased exposure to the elements and environmental stressors in autumn can compromise the skin’s natural barrier function, which is imperative in keeping moisture in and viruses/bacteria out. Dry, scaly and irritated skin can all be signs that you’re experiencing a weakened skin barrier.
LUI Tip: Use body care products that have been formulated with nourishing ingredients like plant oils, fatty acids, vitamin E, niacinamide and squalane.
3. PROTECT YOUR SKIN DURING SHAVING
Autumn’s cool and dry air can leave the skin more sensitive during shaving, making it vulnerable to razor bumps, burn and ingrown hairs. It’s important to use a shave cream that has been formulated to protect and cushion the skin. We developed our SHAVE CREAM with soothing, calming and nourishing ingredients that also consider your skin’s microbiome too. It contains shea butter, aloe vera, chamomile and a luxurious blend of omega-rich plant oils (macadamia, avocado, olive, sweet almond and jojoba).
LUI Tip: it can be tempting to turn up the shower temperature as the weather cools, but hot water can dry out the skin even more. Instead, opt for lukewarm water when shaving this autumn.
4. INCREASE HYDRATION
Replenish lost hydration from within. In summer we naturally want to drink lots of water, but in autumn we may need to remind ourselves to increase our daily fluid intake. Always have a water bottle on-hand or sip on warm, herbal teas throughout the day. Incorporate vegetables with a high water content into your diet, such as cucumber, radishes, romaine lettuce, zucchini, asparagus, cabbage and cauliflower.
LUI Tip: We like to drink chai tea in autumn. It’s made from aromatic ingredients like cinnamon, ginger, cloves and cardamom, which taste so warming and comforting.
5. ELEVATE MOISTURE LEVELS
Daily body moisturisation is a must in autumn. Boost the skin’s moisture levels with an emollient moisturiser to counter the drying effects of cool air and indoor heating. Give yourself a luxurious body treatment from neck-to-toe each time you shower with our BODY MOISTURISER. This best-selling product contains antioxidant-rich ingredients and vital nutrients that infuse the skin with long-lasting hydration.
LUI Tip: Apply the BODY MOISTURISER liberally just after you’ve stepped out of the shower or the bath. Using it on damp skin will increase the ingredient penetration and help to retain moisture for even longer.
