Moisturiser Textures: Cream, Lotion, Gel
Using body moisturiser is an essential step in achieving dewy and glowy skin. Moisturiser performs a dual purpose: it both softens the skin and it locks in hydration.
You may have heard of the SKIN’S BARRIER FUNCTION. Also known as the acid mantle, it refers to the outermost layer of the skin. The barrier function is inextricable to skin health as it keeps the good stuff (hydration) in and the bad stuff (pollution and bacteria) out. The skin’s barrier performs best when it is well-hydrated, so using a body moisturiser daily is imperative in supporting and boosting this natural biological function.
When you think about the skin as the body’s largest organ, it’s easier to understand why it might need some nourishment. The skin is essentially a protective shield that defends our organs, so it’s highly exposed to the elements. Environmental factors such as sun exposure, pollution exposure and even things like exposure to indoor heating and hot water can dry the skin out. Using a body moisturiser infuses the skin with hydrating ingredients for a supple finish.
It’s good to note there are three main different moisturiser categories: EMOLLIENTS, HUMECTANTS AND OCCLUSIVES. Emollients soften and smooth the skin; humectants increase the skin’s water content; and occlusives lock in moisture and prevent evaporation.

So, now that we’ve covered off the basics, let’s get down to moisturiser textures. You’ll come across a handful of options, each with their own benefits. The most important thing is finding a texture you love, which will set you up for the best chance of incorporating your moisturiser as a non-negotiable into your daily body care routine.
Cream moisturisers are our personal preference. They have a thick and luxurious texture, along with a higher oil content that forms a protective layer on the top of the skin. This helps to lock in nourishment and prevent cellular water loss. Ideal for dry skin and use in WINTER, creams feel deeply nourishing. Our BODY MOISTURISER sinks into the skin quickly, loading it up with antioxidants and NATURALLY ACTIVE ingredients.
Lotion moisturisers have a thinner and lighter texture. They have a higher water content, which tends to make them less effective in nourishing the skin however they do absorb quickly and are easy to use because they can quickly applied. Lotions are generally more suited to the warmer months when humidity is naturally higher. Lotions may also come in a spray form, which allows for on-the-go application but runs the risk of only providing the skin with a superficial amount of coverage.
Gel moisturisers can feel really refreshing in summer, especially after spending some time outdoors or in the sun. With a jelly-like consistency, they usually have little to no oil content and a high amount of water content. While this makes for a lightweight feel and fast absorption, it also means the skin is receiving mostly water and a minimal amount of ingredients that can affect change at a cellular level.
It really does come down to personal preference! Whatever type of moisturiser you choose, get the most out of your product by ensuring the skin is adequately prepped. EXFOLIATE the skin while you're in the shower or bath with BODY POLISH to delicately remove dead skin cells and unclog the pores. This will give your moisturiser the optimal chance of penetrating the skin, entering deep into the dermis. You might even like to add a few drops of oil on top of your body moisturiser to really seal the deal. This locks hydration into the skin, and gets those active ingredients working even harder.
