Everything You Need to Know About: Niacinamide

Niacinamide is a gentle, multi-tasking ACTIVE INGREDIENT that belongs not just in your facial serums, but also in your BODY CARE ROUTINE. Well-tolerated by all skin types, it is known for its soothing superpowers. Read on below for everything you need to know about niacinamide.

WHAT IS NIACINAMIDE?

Also referred to as vitamin B3 and nicotinamide, niacinamide is a skin-strengthening vitamin and potent antioxidant. While it is not found naturally in the skin, it works in conjunction with substances that are. It is water-soluable, meaning it is readily absorbed by the body.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF NIACINAMIDE?

Improves Hydration: Niacinamide supports the skin's BARRIER FUNCTION to lock in, and retain, moisture. It works by encouraging the production of ceramides (natural oils and fatty acids) found within the skin. This creates hydrated, dewy skin.

Soothes Inflammation: With skin-soothing benefits, niacinamide can aid in reducing redness caused by common skin conditions like acne, rosacea and eczema. It can also comfort the skin after the use of strong ingredients like RETINOL and chemical exfoliators.

Brightens Skin: Niacinamide can lighten dark spots and hyperpigmentation in the skin, simultaneously boosting radiance and smoothing out uneven texture.

Reduces Wrinkles: As an antioxidant, niacinamide protects the skin against environmental aggressors that accelerate the signs of premature skin ageing like fine lines, wrinkles and uneven texture. It arms the skin against oxidative stress and free radicals (which destroy healthy skin cells).

Increases Skin Elasticity: Niacinamide can promote the synthesis of collagen, elastin and keratin, proteins found naturally in the skin that are responsible for giving it 'bounce' and ensuring it stays dewy and plump.

WHO CAN USE NIACINAMIDE?

Niacinamide is a gentle ingredient that can be used by all skin types, including those with sensitive skin, congested skin and dry skin. It is safe to start using niacinamide in adolescence (and can even help to balance excess oil production during this time).

WHY SHOULD I USE NIACINAMIDE IN MY BODY CARE ROUTINE?

Along with being a great addition to your facial skincare routine, niacinamide's benefits outlined above are equally applicable to body care. The skin on the body is as susceptible to ageing and the same skin conditions that affect our faces, so it should be treated with the same level of kindness and consideration.

HOW DO I INCORPORATE NIACINAMIDE INTO MY BODY CARE ROUTINE?

Niacinamide plays nicely with other active ingredients, so you may find it formulated in a body care product next to peptides, chemical exfoliators or other antioxidants. In fact, pairing niacinamide with other active ingredients can provide even better, more targeted results. For example, you will find niacinamide in our BODY MOISTURISER alongside retinal (which work together to protect against environmental aggressors), antioxidants like honeysuckle extract, cloudberry oil and soybean oil (which, when combined, brighten the skin and boost luminosity), and squalane (when paired with niacinamide, its hydrating benefits are amplified).

HOW LONG DOES NIACINAMIDE TAKE TO WORK?

Depending on the skin concern you are targeting and the strength of niacinamide being applied, you should start seeing results after 2-4 weeks of twice daily usage. Like with all skincare ingredients, it's important to maintain consistency for best results.
