A Guide to Shaving Sensitive Skin
A common skin condition, sensitive skin is skin that’s more reactive to stimuli like the use of certain products/ingredients or environmental factors (like fabrics and climates). It presents as redness, itching, inflammation and sometimes a rash, all of which can be uncomfortable, mentally distressing and even painful. If you experience sensitive skin, shaving is still possible, but may just require a little bit of extra care and attention in order to not further inflame the skin. Read on below for our tips on how to easily and effectively remove hair at home, without causing extra aggravation.
PREP THE SKIN
Soak in a warm bath or allow the steam from your shower to slowly open up your pores before shaving. This will prevent the chance of INGROWN HAIRS. Use an exfoliator on the areas of the body that you wish to shave. This will get rid of dead skin cells and allow your razor to seamlessly glide across the skin. Our BODY POLISH is formulated with a considered blend of physical and chemical exfoliators. Salicylic acid and charcoal powder deeply penetrate pores and remove impurities. Finely milled volcanic pumice polishes, revitalises and stimulates circulation. Shea butter and soybean oil protect and nourish, leaving the skin smooth and hydrated.
USE A SHAVE CREAM
If you have sensitive skin, you may want to pay extra attention to what’s in your shave cream. Products that have a high foam and are brightly coloured and strongly fragranced often contain harsh ingredients (like alcohols, dyes and sulphates) that can strip the skin of its natural oils and further aggravate sensitive skin. Our SHAVE CREAM is PH-BALANCED, meaning it will support the SKIN’S BARRIER FUNCTION rather than taking from it. It contains soothing and calming natural ingredients like shea butter, aloe vera and avocado oil – along with plant-based bioactive oils – that nurture and nourish sensitive skin. It’s very important to ALWAYS USE A SHAVE CREAM and never dry shave, especially if you are prone to sensitive skin. Shave cream creates a physical cushion between your skin and your razor, protecting it from micro-trauma.
SHAVE WITH A SHARP RAZOR
Using a dull razor is a recipe for disaster when it comes to sensitive skin. A blunt razor requires multiple passes across the same area of skin to remove hair, causing unnecessary friction and tension. Not to mention, it can also harbour bacteria. The LUI RAZOR works with your curves to give you your best shave yet – wherever you choose to use it. Ergonomically designed to sit comfortably in your hand, a soft-touch grip and perfectly weighted handle provides control and precision. Five diamond-sharp blades, enclosed in a moisturising Vitamin E cushion, make for an exceptionally close shave while rehydrating the skin. We recommend replacing your REFILL BLADES after 6-8 shaves.
GO WITH THE GRAIN
Usually, we suggest shaving against the grain for the cleanest shave possible. However, if you have sensitive skin it’s better to just shave with the grain. This will still give you the desired silky smooth outcome, while minimising the chance of irritation. Rinse the blade after every few strokes to remove the accumulation of shave cream and hair.
HYDRATE THE SKIN
Shaving in itself is a form of physical exfoliation, so it’s important to hydrate sensitive skin after doing so. Lock moisturise into the skin with a cleanly formulated cream. Our BODY MOISTURISER is front-loaded with naturally active ingredients. Squalane and niacinamide elevate moisture levels and provide vital nutrients to support the skin’s barrier function. An antioxidant-rich blend of honeysuckle extract, cloudberry oil, soybean oil and shea butter soothes and softens for a radiant glow especially after shaving. For best results, apply to your skin while it’s still slightly damp.
TAKE EXTRA CARE
Always take your time with shaving and use this act as a moment to connect with yourself and honour the skin you’re in. Use long, gentle strokes with a light amount of pressure. This especially applies if you already have sensitive skin and you’re shaving sensitive areas like your BIKINI LINE or UNDERARMS.
