5 Easy Ways to Elevate Your Bathroom Aesthetic
When it comes to the interior space, bedrooms, lounge rooms and kitchens seem to get most of the attention. Unfortunately bathrooms can remain neglected, despite being areas we spend a lot of time in. They're often the first place we visit when we wake, and the last touchpoint before bed. So, what are some simple ways to make them chic and inviting? Below are five tips to immediately elevate your bathroom – no renovations required.
ADD AMBIENT LIGHTING
Lighting has the unique ability to completely transform a space. Harsh, overhead lights are aggressive at the best of times and definitely not ideal for those vulnerable moments that take place in the bathroom, like de-robing and stepping into the shower after a long day. Instead, illuminate your bathroom with the soft glow of a candle or source a cute cordless lamp that you can easily re-locate around the room. If you're renting or not wanting to bother with wiring, you could even explore battery-operated or rechargeable wall sconces. Bonus points if they have dimmable settings.
TRY OUT TOWELLING
Without having to paint a wall, towelling is a fantastic way to inject a pop of colour and texture into your bathroom. If you're wanting to imbue vibrancy and warmth to an otherwise neutral or clinical bathroom, cheerfully coloured hand towels and bath mats can do a lot of heavy lifting. Reversley, if you're looking to mellow out busy tiling or modernise a retro bathroom, a stack of fluffy white towels will do just the trick. We love towels made from organic cotton. Not only is it more environmentally sustainable, this fibre is also known for its soft pile and hypoallergenic properties.
CURATE YOUR VANITY
Cleaning up your countertop is a fast way to streamline your bathroom's aesthetic and DE-CLUTTER. Put on your visual merchandising hat as you style your sink-side display. You may wish to invest in a beautiful hand wash or decant your current one into an unbranded bottle. We like to make little clusters of products and place them on a tray to act as a focal point on the vanity. Think your favourite perfume, a tube of hand cream and a trinket dish for jewellery and hair clips grouped together on a marble plinth or ceramic platter. Beautiful and functional.
BRING THE OUTSIDE, IN
Inject a sense of the great outdoors into your bathroom with lush greenery. Along with adding a sense of life to the space, plants can also help to purify the air of your bathroom, prevent mold from occurring, and even aid in reducing stress and anxiety. Just be sure to choose the right flora. The bathroom is often a low-lit and humid room, so go for plants that thrive in damp and dim environments such as ferns, peace lilies, orchids and bamboo. If plants are too much of a commitment, next time you get a bunch of fresh flowers you could easily donate a stem or two to your bathroom, displaying it on the aforementioned-and-now-curated vanity.
ELEVATE WITH ART
Who says art only belongs on the gallery wall? Decorating your bathroom with a few framed paintings or photographs, or even a sculpture if you feel so inclined, is a great way to instill some personality into the space. Floating shelves are perfect for displaying small artworks and objects – but keep in mind that moisture and steam creates a dangerous climate for your precious pieces. Seek out artworks made from materials like glass, metal or waterproofed canvas and try to ventilate your bathroom as much as possible to prevent damage. A line art illustration might add a sense of fluidity and softness, while vintage artworks can give your bathroom an eclectic air.
