What We're Doing To Be More Sustainable
As beauty-lovers who care about the future of our planet, it was very important in developing LUI that we tread as gently on this earth as possible. We believe that as brand owners it is our responsibility to do our bit. Recognising that sustainability is a journey and not a destination, we developed LUI with environmentally-conscious principles in mind. We understand that there’s a lot of greenwashing within the beauty industry, so we want to be transparent about the steps that we are taking to be more sustainable. We’re committed to growing, learning and innovating in order to find more circular solutions. Read on below to find out a bit more about how we're working to lessen our footprint and reduce waste.
RECYCLED PLASTIC PACKAGING
Plastic packaging not only requires fossil fuels for its creation, but is a key contributor to waste. According to TerraCycle, the global beauty industry produces over 120 billion units of packaging each year with only a small portion of this massive figure (about 9%) being recycled. All of our bottles, tubes and tubs are made from recycled plastic. Each vessel contains a minimum of 25% post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic. This helps to keep materials currently in use in circulation and reduces our reliance on virgin resources. We want to show that being sustainable does not need to come at the expense of aesthetics.
FSC CERTIFIED PAPER & CARDBOARD
We choose to use paper and cardboard across our packaging suite and unboxing experience that has been certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. While using FSC materials is a larger investment for us as a business, doing what we can to help mitigate climate change is worth every cent in our opinion. FSC certification ensures that the wood used to create the paper and cardboard has been sourced from responsibly managed forests. The Forest Stewardship Council is the world's biggest and most respected non-governmental organisation focused on sustainable forestry. Our SHAVE CREAM, BODY POLISH and MOISTURISER are packaged in FSC certified cartons. All of our products are shipped in FSC certified mailer boxes, and we use FSC certified paper across all our posters and postcards.
NATURAL INGREDIENTS
The Shave Cream, Body Polish and Body Moisturiser are formulated with up to 97% naturally derived ingredients and less than 1% fragrance. Prioritising plant-based ingredients over synthetic ingredients, which may have negative impacts on both human and environmental health, allows us to shift away from petrochemicals without compromising efficacy. Many petroleum-based ingredients require extensive mining, which degrades soil and threatens our ecosystems. In using naturally derived ingredients, such as oils and extracts from plants and flowers, we can help to increase biodiversity while nurturing and nourishing the skin. Our formulations are full of bioactive ingredients without any harmful additives, fillers or chemicals. They're free from parabens, phthalates, sulphates, petrochemicals, synthetic dyes, mineral oil and palm oil.
LOCALLY MADE FORMULATIONS
The Shave Cream, Body Polish and Body Moisturiser have been developed and made in Australia by female chemists. Producing our products here within Australia not only supports the local economy and skincare industry, but allows us to have visibility over our supply chain. Local production is more sustainable because it involves less transport, greatly reducing energy expenditure. When products are produced locally, they travel less miles, which means lower fuel consumption and fewer carbon emissions.
VEGAN AND CRUELTY-FREE
Our formulations are vegan and cruelty-free, allowing for a lower environmental footprint compared to animal-derived alternatives. Animal agriculture is very resource-intensive and a major contributor to loss of biodiversity and climate change. There is a growing focus on the importance of animal welfare in the sustainability discussion. Protecting animal life maintains the delicate balance of our ecosystems. Vegan and cruelty-free products avoid the use of harmful chemicals, ultimately ensuring they are not reintroduced into the environment and waterways.
A REUSABLE RAZOR
The LUI RAZOR is made from premium materials that are made to last. Billions of disposable plastic razors are sent to landfill each year, contributing greatly to landfill mass and pollution. The lifespan of disposable razors is short; they are often only used a handful of times before being thrown away. The LUI Razor is in it for the long haul. Its high quality construction means that it will be loved for years to come; the Refill Blades are the only thing that gets replaced.
