How To: Shave With Eczema
If you experience eczema, you will know that the skin is extra sensitive, which can pose a few challenges for achieving a smooth and clean shave. Eczema is a common skin condition that is used as an umbrella term to describe a number of inflammatory issues relating to the skin. It causes the skin to become itchy, irritated, red, scaly, dry and bumpy. It usually occurs as a result of an impaired SKIN BARRIER and can be exacerbated by certain products and ingredients. Atopic dermatitis is the most prevalent form of eczema. With a little extra care, the right tools and an understanding of technique, a silky-smooth shave without any flare-ups is totally possible. Read on for tips about how to shave with eczema (and of course consultant a medical professional such as a dermatologist for personalised advice).
PREP THE SKIN
Create a smooth canvas for your razor to seamlessly glide across by using a body exfoliator. This will deeply clear the pores to remove a build-up of dead skin and hair from inside the follicle, reducing any risk of added irritation or ingrowns. Our BODY POLISH has been formulated with a considered blend of physical and chemical exfoliators to encourage cell turnover and reveal radiance. Salicylic acid and charcoal powder remove impurities, while shea butter and soybean oil protect and nourish. We also recommend letting the warm water of your bath or hot steam from your shower to gradually open up your pores before shaving. Wait a few minutes to let the skin and hair follicle soften before you go straight in with your razor.
APPLY A GENTLE SHAVE CREAM
A lot of high-foam shave creams on the market contain harsh ingredients that strip the skin of natural oils and can be incredibly drying and irritating for those with eczema. Instead, seek out a shave cream that has been created using gentle ingredients that balance the skin's microbiome. Free from synthetic dyes, parabens, sulphates, phthalates, silicones, mineral oil and toxic ingredients, our SHAVE CREAM has a luxuriously creamy low-lather texture that provides a nourishing cushion between your razor and your skin. We've selected plant-based ingredients, like macadamia oil, chamomile and aloe vera, to soothe and nurture the skin. Plus, it's PH-BALANCED. As always, do a patch test prior to use to gauge whether it's suitable for your skin.
USE THE RIGHT RAZOR
If you have eczema, choose a razor that has multiple sharp blades made of stainless steel or coated with platinum. Our signature RAZOR features five diamond-sharp stainless steel nickel-free blades, which are enclosed in a moisturising Vitamin E cushion, which make for an exceptionally close shave while rehydrating the skin. Ergonomically designed to sit comfortably in your hand, a soft-touch grip and perfectly weighted handle provides control and precision — wherever you choose to use it.

REACH FOR A FRESH RAZOR BLADE
If you have eczema, avoid using a dull razor blade as this creates unnecessary friction on already tender skin. A blunt razor requires multiple passes over the same area of skin to get the same result. Plus, it can be a breeding ground for bacteria that can further inflame patches of eczema. For best results and the least chance of aggravation, we recommend replacing your REFILL BLADE after every 6-8 shaves. This will ensure you're protecting yourself and getting that velvet-touch after shaving.
SHAVE WITH THE GRAIN
Usually we'd recommend shaving with the direction of hair growth and then against it for a clean shave, but if you have eczema it may be wise to just shave with the grain. This will reduce the risk of flare-ups and be least irritating on the skin. Shaving with the grain minimises pulling on the hair follicles and is a much gentler method. Use short and gentle strokes, taking your time.
TREAT SKIN POST-SHAVE
Add some after-care to your eczema shaving routine by gently patting, not rubbing, the skin once you step out of the shower. It's important to moisturise after you shave, as this creates a physical barrier on top of the skin that locks hydration in and can help to soothe any irritation. Try a thick emollient cream made with oils, as these seal in moisture. Like with any product on eczema skin, always carry out a patch test prior to use. Our BODY MOISTURISER contains squalane and niacinamide to elevate moisture levels and provide vital nutrients to support the skin’s barrier function. An antioxidant-rich blend of honeysuckle extract, cloudberry oil, soybean oil and shea butter soothes and softens for a radiant glow especially after shaving.
AVOID AGGRESSORS
Try to avoid super hot showers or baths if you're experiencing as eczema, as this can tamper with the skin's pH levels and cause further dryness. It's also advised to choose gentle cleansers over traditional soaps, and avoid potential allergens like essential oils, harsh alcohols and dyes.
