How To Avoid Razor Bumps & Irritation in Intimate Areas
If you do choose to shave your pubic area or bikini line, you'll know that this area of the body can be pretty sensitive. The skin around the intimate area is much thinner and more delicate than skin on other parts of the body, so is susceptible to aggravation. This region also has a higher amount of nerve endings, so can be sensitive to external factors – such as shaving. Razor bumps, or ingrown hairs, occur when hair becomes trapped inside the skin’s follicle. Equally as undesirable, irritation happens when a razor removes the top layer of your skin too harshly, allowing bacteria to enter the pores. Both conditions manifest as small red bumps that can look angry and feel uncomfortable. The good news is that with a little extra care and attention, it's possible to get a smooth and clean shave wherever your RAZOR glides. Read on below to find out how to avoid razor bumps and irritation in intimate areas.
PREP THE SKIN
The outcome of a shave is dependent on how the skin is prepped. We recommend stepping into a warm (not hot!) shower or bath and allowing the water and steam to gradually open up your pores over the course of at least a few minutes before even thinking about reaching for your razor. This will slowly coax the hair out of the follicle. Using an exfoliator on the intimate area before shaving will create a perfectly smooth canvas for your razor, removing dead skin cells that can block the pores and irritate the skin. Formulated with a considered blend of both physical and chemical exfoliators, along with hydrating and nourishing ingredients, our BODY POLISH can be gently worked into the intimate area skin in circular motions before shaving.
ALWAYS USE SHAVE CREAM
Shave cream is an essential step in getting a close and pain-free shave on the bikini line and pubic area. Shaving itself is a form of physical exfoliation that can actually create micro-tears on the skin. Using a well-formulated shave cream creates a physical cushion or barrier between your skin and your razor, allowing it to seamlessly glide across the skin – rather than harshly tugging at it. Look for soothing and nourishing ingredients that create a proper buffer for your razor and give back to the skin. Along with being PH-BALANCED (which is especially important when shaving intimate areas), our SHAVE CREAM contains shea butter to soften the hair follicle and skin, and aloe vera and avocado oil to soothe and calm.

INVEST IN THE RIGHT TOOLS
Choosing the best possible razor is an essential step in achieving a bump and burn-free shave 'down there'. Razors with more blades impart more pressure, which allows each blade to cut down hairs with less force but better results – and less chance of irritation. We designed our signature LUI RAZOR specifically for the way in which women shave. Ergonomically designed to sit comfortably in your hand, a soft-touch grip and perfectly weighted handle provides control and precision. Five diamond-sharp blades, enclosed in a moisturising Vitamin E cushion, make for an exceptionally close shave while rehydrating the skin.
USE THE CORRECT TECHNIQUE
We recommend shaving with the direction of hair growth to first trim the hair down as close to the skin as possible and then going against the grain with a single short and gentle stroke to leave a smooth and velvety finish on the skin. It's really important to use a fresh razor and replace your REFILL BLADES often (after every 6-8 shaves) for a few key reasons. Firstly, blunt razors are a recipe for bumps and burn. Using a blunt razor requires multiple across the same area of skin to remove the hair, which creates unnecessary friction. Secondly, razors can harbour bacteria and not replacing your blades often enough can transfer this into your freshly-opened follicles. Ouch!
TREAT THE SKIN POST-SHAVE
Yoru shave doesn't end in the shower or bath. After you hop out of the water, gently pat the skin dry with a clean towel. You might even like to hold a cold compress onto the area for a few minutes if it looks a little inflamed. Moisturise the intimate area after shaving to calm down any irritation and rehydrate the area. Our BODY MOISTURISER takes inspiration from some of our favourite facial skincare products and incorporates naturally active ingredients designed to treat the skin after shaving. Squalane and niacinamide elevate moisture levels and provide vital nutrients to support the SKIN'S BARRIER FUNCTION. An antioxidant-rich blend of honeysuckle extract, cloudberry oil, soybean oil and shea butter soothes and softens. We suggest wearing loose clothing made from natural fibres for a few hours after shaving the intimate area.
